If you know me and my journey at Saddleback Church, you would have guessed what the “What if” #5 was going to be. Well, here it is. What if there are 5 purposes of the church?

I’m not sure if you’re familiar with Westminster Shorter Catechism, but it begins with this; “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.” Why do we exist? Why does our church exist? We exist to give glory to God, and we find our purposes on earth from the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:34-40) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20).

If you’re not familiar with the five biblical purposes or want to refresh your memory, I want to encourage you check out 2 books: The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For? and The Purpose Driven Church.

In my opinion, balancing the five biblical purposes of the church is a must, and this is how we’re going to be able to measure the health of a church. We will love God and others, share the gospel with unbelievers, fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ, and become more like Jesus Christ. In other words, the five biblical purposes are worship, ministry, evangelism, fellowship, and discipleship.

The question is what these five biblical purposes will look like in a coffee shop church. In this video, I tried to share at least 1 idea for a coffee shop church on each purpose, but please understand that we will try and experiment as many different methods as possible without compromising the message and mission of the church. We will do every possible ways to grow the church, and as a reminder, we’re the church and growing the church means making more disciples.

Thank you everyone for your prayers. I’m also praying for you that the Lord would continue to keep you and bless you in everything you do.
